6. Many critics identify Settlers of the Marsh as a foundational novel of the prairies, imagining that life of prairie homesteaders for Canadian literature. How does Grove imagine life on the prairies? What are the themes he finds most pertinent to a narrative of settlement?

7. How does Settlers of the Marsh approach the issue of gender roles? In what ways do the characters’ romantic and sexual relationships inform the novel’s themes?
