Case Law

Manitoba Metis Federation Inc. v. Canada (Attorney General), 2013 SCC 14 (CanLII), [2013] 1 SCR 623

  • The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) vs. Canada case was won on March 8, 2013. The Supreme Court judged that the Manitoba Act 1870 had failed to provide adequate land provisions for Métis as promised by the Crown in s.31. This Supreme Court ruling was significant as it succeeded in recognizing injustices committed by the Crown against Métis and in turn secured future negotiations between the Federal Government and the MMF pertaining to modern day Métis land claims.

Daniels v. Canada (Indian Affairs and Northern Development), 2016 SCC 12 (CanLII), [2016] 1 SCR 99

  • This landmark case addressed whether the Crown owes the same fiduciary duty to Métis and Non-Status Indians as it does to Treaty Indians.

R. v. Powley, 2003 SCC 43 (CanLII), [2003] 2 SCR 207
